The conflict in hisMoreAspiration and a hesitant desire to pursue retribution assail Gary Broady who finds himself impulsively linked with an old adversary, Roland ‘Robbo’ Bowman. He is torn between reprisals and seeking just reward for his labours.

The conflict in his various relationships sucks him in deeper and he becomes dubious as to who has most to gain or lose. Ultimately when it appears he may have the upper hand in a three-cornered duel involving both Robbo and the femme fatale Georgina, his desire for love surfaces unbidden. It both helps and hinders until the shocking climax of discovery at the brink of an uncertain and pyrrhic victory. It is a contemporary tale mindful of changing ethical standards in international defence sales when recession affects the hopes and ambitions of individuals.

Gary is intrigued by the mystery of an unexplained death that may affect his own relationships and intentions. The athletic Gary had his original ambition wrecked and he has twice lost his livelihood thanks mainly to Robbo who is a social bully. Georgina manipulates people to get money- Robbo enjoys power and manipulation for their own sake.Georgina has acquired the name of the Black Widow. To her the promise of sex is simply a tool and marriage is a weapon. Georgina, formerly influential in a gold mining company, has business aims directly contrary to Gary’s employer and she wants his help.

Sir Denis, Gary’s old friend and mentor, gets caught in the cross-fire much to Gary’s everlasting regret and their relationship suffers. He finds himself fascinated by the stunning Carla who claims to be a dancer but seems to have more than one job, more than one life and knows people in high places. The action moves from the Lake District, England, to the Far Eastern cities of Kuala Lumpur and Manila and the Malaysian island of Langkawi where British politics and Asian culture are yet further factors.

Gary sold amphibious, disaster relief vehicles to the Philippines when he worked for Sir Denis. There was a bigger deal to be done with the military but he was outmanoeuvred by Robbo’s dirty little play. Georgina wants the main deal Gary is working on wrecking by him and she assumes their sexual trysts are adequate reward. It then transpires that the main barrier to his success may be the British establishment in the guise of DESO (Defence Export Services Organisation).Carla’s nude modelling work had her thrown off the television series Strictly Come Dancing and her ennobled uncle, the Earl of Almscliffe, is hypocritically ‘sniffy’.

However her connections become extremely useful to Gary. Having had the brush off by British civil servants who favour a helicopter sale to the Philippines, Gary tries to secure HMG backing by embarrassing the Minister for Defence Procurement, the Right Honourable Peter Adderley, who is prone to sexual peccadilloes and is known to Carla.Georgina is seeking to destabilise Gary’s burgeoning relationship with Carla in any way she can- she traps him in a liaison. Also, Sir Denis has upset some senior establishment figures and his company is being investigated by the Fraud Squad for bribery in contracts he secured in Malaysia.Life drives good guy Gary to believe there should be no statute of limitations on reparations.

He subscribes to the theme of an old Irish proverb he picked up somewhere: the grass grows long on the road to wild justice.
