Beyond that, there are few similarities among them. Bitter-Sweet Chocolate tells the story of Ginger, a young 81, twice widowed, but happy with her life and with her memories of two wonderful husbands. She is about to undergo a non-life threatening surgery. Post-surgery, she will convalesce at the home of her son Phil at his insistence. She is apprehensive about the stay, and rightly so. Rodney, the protagonist of The Retired Guy from Mars, has just moved to Tucson Estates.

He sees it as a happy hunting ground for a replacement of his second wife who had blind-sided him with a divorce shortly before their retirement. The hunt leads him to Brenda, a gorgeous widow with a mind of her own. Dr. Taigen’s Patient, Eddie Davis, “marches to a different drummer,” which sometimes leads him into metaphorical swamps and minefields.

The protagonist of The Curmudgeon, Elton Bailey, was formerly a squeaky-clean and mild-mannered CPA who at 59 finds himself arrested on a felony charge of money-laundering. The experience leads to a profound change in his world view. In the aftermath, he retires to Tucson Estates to rebuild his life. All his life he has despised the game of golf. Nonetheless, for what are arguably sound reasons, he chooses a home adjacent to the fairway of the sixth hole of the Tucson Estates golf course. In the months that follow he finds himself in bitter conflict with the golfing community.

Gus Engstrom, the protagonist of the final story in this collection, is a retired small town cop from Washington States Olympic Peninsula. After the cops quota of two busted marriages he has found the love of his life in Sheila, only to lose her to a drunk driver after three short years. Renewal is the story of how he rebuilds his life after a small world encounter in Tombstone brings him to Tucson Estates.

Incidentally, this story is prologue to Gus subsequent second career as a private investigator. Shady Acres, in which he takes an undercover assignment for his FBI brother Jason, is also on Kindle. Readers should know that Tucson Estates is an actual community that has been the author’s home for the last six years, first as a snow-bird and now year round.

Four of these stories are truly fictional, albeit inspired by what might be termed the spirit of Tucson Estates. A fifth is pretty much autobiographical from the time this “different drummer” dude, now on the cusp of seventy-five and counting, arrives at the Estates.
